A few weeks ago, the Hillcrest Family YMCA received a call from Henry Butler who wished to join, but he had a concern. He is blind and requires someone to be with him to ensure his safety and help him become familiar with the facility and equipment.
Branch Membership Director Trish Eustace spoke to him and discovered his desire to belong, but he was hesitant. She collaborated with the branch’s fitness team to create his workout plan. Thanks to the generous donation of the Rotary Club of Hillcrest, a trainer at the branch will provide individual guidance to help him learn the equipment, access the pool and take fitness classes. He made his first visit to the branch on October 29 and worked with YMCA personal trainer Sami (Samantha) Caruso-Taylor. He had a great experience!
As important, we will have the opportunity to connect him to other members and make him feel very able! He will also be quite an inspiration to others in our community.
Making sure our Y is welcoming to all is at the heart of our mission. Recently, our West Shore branch conducted a Tri at the Y indoor marathon program and provided equipment so those with disabilities could participate. Thanks to your support as a member and through the donations of members, friends and partners, we can provide a meaningful and healthy experience to all who want to enjoy the Y movement.
