Y Staff member working with child during afterschool program

Natisha Bowling, YMCA of Greater Cleveland Senior Vice President of Youth Development, was interviewed by NEO Parent Magazine for an article titled “3 tips for finding the right before and after-school programs for Northeast Ohio kids.” The article appeared in the publication’s September 2024 edition. This article was adapted from that piece.

As students across Northeast Ohio head back to school, grownups are either recovering from their annual scramble to find before and after school care – or still scrambling.

For working grownups with unforgiving schedules or a lack of flexibility in the morning and afternoon, that before- and after-school dance is a mad dash with no perfect solutions. Natisha Bowling, vice president of youth development at the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, says programs like the YMCA’s provide significant advantages, including piece of mind for parents, and building social and emotional skills for kiddos.

We asked Bowling a few questions to give parents some guidance when considering how to choose an after-school program that’s right for their families:

Northeast Ohio Parent: What questions should I be asking after-care providers before committing?

Bowling: It is important to know the weekly cost of the program and what is included in the cost. Is a morning and after school snack included? Is the program Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) rated? This gives the parent an indication of quality. It will reveal if the instructors have experience and/or credentials. Always ask what the discipline policy is and if you can have it in writing. It should be detailed in the parent handbook. Don’t make assumptions about tutoring or homework assistance. Ask specifically what you should expect regarding academic support. Ask about ongoing communication like newsletters, memos, and parent engagement opportunities. These are the ways you stay abreast of events/activities, build a relationship with the staff, and ways that you can stay abreast of things to come. Lastly, if your child has any special needs make sure you discuss that with the instructor to determine if they are able to accommodate those needs appropriately.

NEOP: Are there specific things grownups should be looking for?

Bowling: Absolutely, look for materials and supplies that children have access to use to express their creativity like books, manipulatives, art supplies, and group games. Look for smiling faces (adults & children) with children interacting together and adults who are engaging with them (not standing around watching children). Look for a daily activity plan and a daily schedule to know how they spend their time with the children. Listen for laughter and lots of talking. Listen to the way the adults speak to the children and each other. Feel if the atmosphere is inviting and welcoming for everyone who walks through the door.

NEOP: Should grownups involve my kids in the decision on where to send them?

Bowling: To a certain degree, it is good to make sure that the children want to attend. However, they usually determine their choice on their friends. Just because their friends like it doesn’t mean that it is a quality choice.
